Drawings in Pen & Ink
I begin most pieces working directly from life. What I’m sensing and receiving from that place or that person, in that moment of time is vitally important to my process. These sessions are usually between 1-3 hours. Working primarily in ink, to quickly get down as many details of what has grabbed my attention.
I often stand while drawing, because the composition won’t hold together as well from a seated position. After the initial session, I’ll continue the piece in the studio. Working from reference photos I’ve taken during that session, I work to steer clear of letting the piece slip into a static state. Focusing my memory back to the initial drawing; I want the scene to retain what was happening then: tree limbs swaying, cars moving in the periphery, and clouds filtering the sun light at intervals.
